Because good research needs good data

data management

UK universities are increasingly developing strategies for research data management.

The JISC Research Data Management training projects (RDMTrain) produced a range of disciplinary training materials. These are available for reuse and have been deposited in JORUM.
To help users find relevant resources, we've mapped the RDMTrain outputs to the data management activities in the DCC lifecycle model.

The JISC-funded Research Data MANTRA project has produced a course for postgraduate students and early career researchers who work with data and would like to learn more about how to manage it effectively. Course content is geared towards the geosciences, social and political sciences and clinical psychology; however, many of the issues covered apply equally to all research disciplines. The MANTRA course, which consists of an online module and practical exercises in data handling, is now openly available at http://datalib.edina.ac.uk/mantra.

The next Research Data Management Forum, the seventh in the series, is set to tackle the challenging theme of how best to incentivise researchers so that they will be motivated to manage and share their data.

The JISC Research Integrity Conference on Sept 13th saw DCC's Director Kevin Ashley and Associate Director Liz Lyon join senior managers from across the HE sector for this event, whose main focus was the importance of good data management. A key topic for discussion was the practical steps and strategies researchers and institutions can take to satisfy new legal and policy demands and to manage risk. J

The DCC has released another guide in its 'How-to' range.

'How to develop a data management and sharing plan' outlines UK funder requirements and provides practical guidance on the planning process. It should be of relevance to researchers and those supporting them within higher education.

You can download the PDF version or browse the guide online.

JISC has recently released a call for institutions to submit proposals for projects under three separate strands of the Managing Research Data Programme (02) 2011-13. Total funding of approximately £4,600,000 will be available.  See JISC's website for further information on the funding strands and relevant deadlines.

Registration for the DCC roadshow in Glasgow on 22nd-24th June is now open!
Earlier this month, the EPSRC announced its new data policy outlining that it expects all those institutions it funds to have developed a clear roadmap by 1st May 2012, and to be fully compliant with these expectations by 1st May 2015.

We held our first data management roadshow in Bath last week, bringing together IT directors, librarians, data managers and researchers to discuss the data challenge.Early feedback has been positive, with many people commenting they now feel better equipped to start addressing data management.Slides are available and Marieke Guy has produced a useful summary of day 2.

Programmes for the 3-day DCC roadshow have now been released, so take a look at the event page and see which day is relevant to you.

Day 1 is gives a general overview to the research data landscape.

Day 2 is targeted at senior managers who want to develop an institutional response to the data management challenge.
