Objectives

To enhance both the global competitiveness of US business, and the US quality of life, by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems, and safeguarding their integrity.

Areas of Activity

ANSI accredits qualified organisations, to develop American National Standards, through coordination of the US voluntary consensus standards system. It provides a neutral forum for the development of standards policies and undertakes a watch on standards development and conformity assessment programs and processes.

Additionally, ANSI promotes the international use of US standards, advocates US policy and technology in international and regional standards organisations and encourages the US adoption of international standards where these are appropriate.

ANSI represents the US at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), of which it is a founding member. It also represents the US at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), through the US National Committee (USNC).

Membership

Membership of ANSI enables access to information and business intelligence, enabling strategic development of organisations and businesses. Activities centre around the interests of four broadly defined constituencies: companies, organisations, government interests and consumers.

Membership is divided into six categories: Company Members, Government Members, Organisational Members, Educational Members, International Members and Individual Members.

Basic annual membership incurs a flat fee. This allows designation of one member representative and participation on ANSI Member Forums, Caucuses and Standards Boards and Panels. Basic members receive discounts on products and services, including standards purchased via the ANSI eStandards Store, and are able to \"top-up\" membership by paying a flat fee to participate in a number of additional areas.

Full membership fees are based on global sales revenue against a published schedule. Full membership includes all the benefits of basic membership and additionally allows the designation of multiple member representatives. It provides the opportunity for participation on the Institute\'s Board of Directors, policy and program oversight and participation in a number of standing committees.
