Objectives

The Network Development and MARC Standards Office is a center for library and information network standards and planning in the Library of Congress. It provides a focus for networking activities in the Library of Congress and includes responsibility for maintaining the MARC standards, Z39.50 and the Encoded Archival Description (EAD)DTD.

Areas of Activity

The Network Development and MARC Standards Office is responsible for:

• maintaining standards for long-term interchange with other systems such as those for Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) and Z39.50 information retrieval protocols
• planning detailed models and specifications with other institutions and with internal Library of Congress units
• coordinating and testing implementation to take standards development and planning to fulfillment through the completion of operational networking systems
