Because good research needs good data

Welcome Laurence Horton - newest member of DCC!

Laurence Horton | 02 September 2021

My name is Laurence, and I am the newest member of the DCC, having joined the team in late August this year.

As a Research Data Specialist, I am going to be working on DCC's involvement in the FAIRsFAIR project, covering topics such as research data policies, and FAIR competencies as well as a range of other DCC activities.

The route to the DCC has been an interesting and enjoyable one. It started with working at the UK Data Archive on processing data sets for reuse, then working on a Jisc MRD project on Research Data Management projects for cross-institutional ESRC funded programmes.

Next was a couple of years at the GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Cologne, Germany helping to set up training in archiving and RDM as part of the CESSDA consortium of European social science data archives.

From there it was back to the UK to help set up an institutional RDM support service at the London School of Economics, with DMPonline an essential component of the service. My time at LSE also covered extending research support into areas like secure data access, persistent identifiers, and text and data mining as well as wider data librarian tasks around reference work and collection development.

A move to Canada followed where I have just graduated from the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto with a Master of Information degree, studying topics like knowledge management, metadata, copyright, data science, data visualisation, reference librarianship, digital preservation, and archives.

Having been part of the DCCs wide community of users and collaborators for many years it's great to now, finally, be part of the team.
